چکیده
RESUME The discrimination between open water and sea ice, and/or between sub -classes of sea ice are challenges for SAR remote sensing. Compared to single channel SAR data, fully polarimetric data contain more physical information about the scattering processes, which can be used to increase the discrimination accuracy. Unsupervised polarimetric classification or segmentation approaches allow the discrimination between sea ice and open water, as well as between several classes of sea ice. However, the main problem lies in the physical interpretation of the obtained classes. Airborne polarimetric SAR data acquired with the Environment Canada CV-580 C-band SAR is classified using an automated Wishart classifier and class mean information is investigated.

Invited session: Advanced Methods for polarimetric information extraction URBAN FEATURE CHARACTERIZATION USING POLARIMETRIC AND POL-IN SAR DATA
Interest in urban feature characterization has increased with the potential of polarimetric satellite SAR data from ALOS (already in orbit), Radarsat-2, TerraSAR, and Cosmo-SkyMed. The Touzi-Decomposition [1] has been introduced for both coherent and incoherent decomposition of target scattering using polarimetric SAR data. In contrast to the existing scattering decompositions [2, 3], the Touzi...
متن کاملRelative Humidity in Liquid, Mixed-Phase, and Ice Clouds
The results of in situ observations of the relative humidity in liquid, mixed, and ice clouds typically stratiform in nature and associated with mesoscale frontal systems at temperatures 45°C Ta 5°C are presented. The data were collected with the help of instrumentation deployed on the National Research Council (NRC) Convair-580. The length of sampled in-cloud space is approximately 23 10 km. T...
متن کاملP2B.10 Comparison and validation of WRF-ARW cloud microphysics schemes during C3VP/CLEX-10 field experiment
Better understanding of the vertical structures of clouds in the atmosphere is essential for more accurate radar, lidar, satellite retrievals, climate/weather numerical modeling, and even aviation safety issues regarding icing conditions (Fleishauer et al., 2002). However, an accurate estimate of liquid and ice phase hydrometeors in the clouds is still very challenging, and our limited knowledg...
متن کاملA solar reflectance method for retrieving the optical thickness and droplet size of liquid water clouds over snow and ice surfaces
Cloud optical thickness and droplet effective radius retrievals from solar reflectance measurements are traditionally implemented using a combination of spectral channels that are absorbing and nonabsorbing for water particles. Reflectances in nonabsorbing channels (e.g., 0.67, 0.86, 1.2 mm spectral window bands) are largely dependent on cloud optical thickness, while longer-wavelength absorbin...

Quasi-simultaneous measurements of the ocean surface by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) Convair-580 (CV-580) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) were acquired on March 20, 1988, along an ascending pass of the Geosat radar altimeter as part of the prelaunch ERS-1 Norwegian Continental Shelf Experiment (NORCSEX '88). Over a region where the SAR look direction is parallel to the wind vector...
